KATWARN 2.3.12

KATWARN is a service app for transmitting hazard and disaster warnings within Germany. The app ensures location-based notifications about danger alerts, such as major fires or extreme weather, and provides the ability to always be informed about the current location and seven additional user-selected locations. This selection can be changed, adjusted, or turned off at any time. By using energy-efficient location tracking through base stations and Wi-Fi access points (rather than GPS), the battery usage is minimal.

KATWARN receives official warning information from relevant authorities, institutions, and control centers that have implemented the KATWARN system. Due to the distribution of warning responsibilities among various institutions in Germany depending on the danger situation, the use of KATWARN may vary regionally. Additionally, KATWARN disseminates warnings from the federal modular warning system (MoWaS/NINA-App) and is also used internationally.

The app features the following functions:

• Active notifications (push messages) about hazards for up to eight locations: current location ("guardian angel") and seven user-selected locations
• Postal code-specific warnings for the selected locations with alert texts and color-based classification of the warning level
• Continuous, anonymized updating of location information, allowing for no additional manual input regarding the location
• Immediate notification upon entering a current danger zone
• Feedback function for providing feedback to the app service provider
